Downey is situated in southeast Los Angeles County, California, United States and 13 miles away from the downtown of Los Angeles. As of last year Census the city's population is 107,323. The city is established in October 13, 1873 during the registration of 126 acre lot of Los Nietos Township in one of the Los Angeles association. The city is named Downey after the governorship and presidency of the land company of John G. Downey during the California Civil War. The first train arrives in Downey in the following year; April 15, 1874 during the Southern Pacific Railroad started the run along Los Angeles and San Diego. The city improved from a dry forest to an agricultural and stock raising community because of the fertility of the soil, temperature and the water supply. Daily deliveries such as mail and passengers are made by the ancient "iron horse" in the Overland Stage. Downey is the place of Apollo Space Program in which the world's oldest "speedee" McDonald is located and the NASA Space Shuttle components are created. The freeways, railroads, seaports, airports, and even the Internet connection are accessible in the city. |
