Gardena is among the city of Los Angeles County which is encircled by Hawthorne on its northwest side, Torrance on its southwest portion, Alondra Park on its western side, Athens to its north, and Los Angeles community of Harbor Gateway on the eastern and southern part. It is approximately populated with 57,700 people according to the 2000 statistics. It was confirmed basing on the archaeological discovery that the Tongva Indian Tribe hunted and fished in the regions of this city. Tongva or also called Gabrielino Indians are believed to be the lineage of people who managed to cross from Asia to North America way back 10,000 years. Other people assumed that the city got its name from its reputation as the only "green spot" amidst the dry area between the sea and the Los Angeles. Three years following the establishments of Los Angeles, in the year 1784, a piece of land was given by the King of Spain to Juan Jose Rodrigue, a Spanish soldier, in acknowledgment of his military service. A portion of this land consists of what is called as Gardena Valley. In the year 1880, the city was put on the map because of the railroads and real estate that prospered in the area. The city was also tagged as "Berryland" due to the acres of berries that are planted here. Every year, Gardena celebrates the Strawberry Day Festival and Parade which is held on the month of May. Gardena, being part of the Los Angeles Basin, is popular for its good weather throughout the year. |
