Populated with approximately 84,200 according to the year 2000 census and is located in the southwestern portion of Los Angeles, California is the city of Hawthorne. In the year 1500, the area was first inhabited by Indians of the Shoshonian tribe. It is said that this group were linguistic and settled on the South Bay of Los Angeles. October 1542 when Juan Cabrillo, a Portuguese traveler seen the land. Thirty years after, Sir Francis Drakehad passed the coastal area while sailing nearby. It was in the year 1769 when all the land titles in California was entrust to the King of Spain, where the areas in the Southbay was utilized for cattle grazing. Mexico received a land title from Spain in 1822 and ranchos were formed. Among it was the Rancho Sausal Redondo which got its name from the round clump of willows in the region but afterwards was given to Antonio Ygnacio Avila by Mexico's Governor Alverado in the year 1837. When California turned into one of United States' domain in 1848, there were conflicts regarding the ownership of the rancho. But eventually, a U.S. Land patent was given to Avila in 1855 which made him the first legal and documented owner of the area of what is Hawthorne today. |
