One of the city in Los Angeles County, California which has an approximate population of 64,000 as of 2005 census is Monterey Park. This city having a slogan of "Pride in the past, Faith in the future" has been inhabited first by the Tongva Native Americans or "Gabrielino" prior to the arrival of Spaniards. These people have houses made of thatched that are woven into dome like design and both male and female wore long hair and have tattoos on their body. However, in 1870, there is not much left of the Tongva tribe because of the Old World disease that stroke the area killing a lot of the tribes’ people. During the early 19th century the region was a portion of the mission system of Mission San Gabriel Archangel but afterward became Rancho San Antonio. The first time the place got its identity is when Alessandro Repetto bought the area of the rancho and constructed his house, just a little bit far from the present location of Edison substation on Garfield Avenue. After several decades, Asian immigrants especially people coming from Mainland China, Taiwan, and Vietnam moved in this region. A lot of businesses where established and Monterey Park was billed as "Little Taipei" because of this. Today, the community of Monterey Park has the largest number of population of Chinese lineage. But in spite of this, the city was never been called Chinatown, rather Downtown Monterey Park. |
